Co-creating Climate-Smart Regenerative Solutions with Students and Community

SENSE and WFN KVDA 2025.2.6

To harnesses the often-underutilized community knowledge and youth’s drive for socio-environmental change, Friends of Nepal (FoN) is now supporting SENSE. We achieve this through a co-creative research approach in the mythical Nagaraj Trail of Nepal connecting different wetlands areas to create ecological/social connectivity and landscape conservation. The students will immerse themselves in understanding the local ecological knowledge and needs and leverage the resources and facilities from their own college to co-create climate-smart regenerative solutions with the local communities to strengthen climate adaptation and resiliency. The co-creation process will enable the integration of indigenous knowledge with academic learnings to develop innovative solutions that are appliable to local context and respects local norms and traditions.

Youth4Climate Initiative

SENSE is now involved in implementing a project entitled “Promotion of regenerative agriculture in Nagdaha, a sub urban area in Kathmandu Valley, Nepal” supported by Youth4Climate initiative. The project adopts Appreciative Participatory Planning and Action (APPA) and the ‘5-Ds’ model – Discovery, Dream, Direction, Design, and Delivery to engage stakeholders for a regenerated farming and livelihood. Youth4Climate initiative is co-led by Government of Italy and UNDP along with strategic partners like Connect4Climate – World Bank Group, UNFCCC Secretariat, and UN Secretary-General’s Youth Advisory Group on Climate Change.

Ecological Health Assessment

SENSE has also been recently supported by Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) to involve citizen scientists in the bioassessment and biomonitoring of the ecological health of the Bagmati River Basin. To achieve this, young people and youths will be mobilized under the citizen science concept for the long-term assessment of the Bagmati River Basin. Mobilizing citizen science can fill the void in river health assessment and help participants build their capacity and potential to make significant contributions to scientific knowledge and understanding. Additionally, it can provide important benefits to participants, such as increased scientific literacy and the opportunity to take an active role in solving real-world problems.

Save Our Wetlands Campaign

SENSE conducted “Save Our Wetlands” campaign under the Shift Accelerator Campaign supported by WWF Nepal and Save The Children. The campaign helped raise awareness about the degrading state of wetlands in Nepal and engaged more than 800 youths, 17 private businesses, digitally reaching more than 335,000 social media users during the campaign duration.

Baseline Study

SENSE conducted a baseline study to assess the current status of climate resilience, disaster risk reduction, and entrepreneurship development in Madhesh Province, Nepal as inital benchmark for the Nepali Yuwa in Climate Action and Green Growth (NYCAGG) project. NYCAGG project is supported by the European Union to promote the involvement of Nepali youth in green growth, environmental protection, and combating climate change and is being implemented in Province 2, Karnali Province, and Sudurpaschim Province through the consortium partners Youth Innovation Lab (YI-LAB), Restless Development Nepal, CREASION, and CDMS.

Household Waste Management Training

Collaborating with RISE, SENSE implemented household waste management training in Bharatpur Metropolitan City, focusing on composting, recycling, and income generation from resources, benefiting 300 women.
